Dr. John Heyl
Vice President, Global Education
As the Vice President of Global Education, Dr. John D. Heyl is the Chief Academic Executive of CEA, providing day-to-day leadership, vision and oversight for all CEA academic endeavors globally. He is responsible for academic programs, budget oversight, representing CEA to appropriate external bodies, academic planning and overall academic vision. Dr. Heyl sets the strategy and implements the academic administrative structures and support services, ultimately overseeing the coordination of all academic activities to best align and support the CEA GlobalCampus Network and CEA partner programs.
Dr. Heyl has extensive experience in international education, as a university professor, international education administrator, association leader, and author. He served most recently as Executive Director of International Programs at Old Dominion University (VA). He served in comparable roles at the University of Missouri-Columbia and Illinois Wesleyan University. Dr. Heyl has taught widely in German, European and global history and in international education. Over the years, He has been recognized for both his teaching and administrative work. He is former president of the Association of International Education Administrators and holds the title of Counselor to that association.
Dr. Heyl holds a doctoral degree in European history from Washington University in St. Louis (MO). He has also held several Fulbright fellowships. Dr. Heyl earned a BA in history from Stanford University (CA), with honors and great distinction. In addition to writings on modern German history, Heyl is the author of “The Senior International Officer (SIO) as an Agent of Change” (AIEA, 2007).
