Culture and Identity Studies: Explore Gay Paris Summer 2011- Innovative New Program Winner 2011 – CEA Global Education and University of Maryland, Baltimore County's "Culture & Identity Studies: Explore Gay Paris" program offers a Gender Studies course that explores the formations and constructions of gay and lesbian identities as they've been framed in Paris, particularly since the end of the 19th century. Students study how the categories of race, socioeconomic status, religion, gender, class, ethnicity and immigration crosscut sexual identity and sexual citizenship. Students live in the Marais district and are immersed not only in French culture, but in Gay French culture. They also have the opportunity to participate in the March des Fiertes LGBT, or LGBT Pride March. |

What students are saying about there experience:
"It is invaluable for all people, regardless of persuasion, to study modern queer studies - but to be in the Marais, fully immersed in foreign culture and alternative perspectives and understandings of "queerness" is crucial for those pursuing in-depth gender/sexuality studies." - Anna Tinnell, Colorado College
"It was invaluable to be full immersed in the Marais while learning about queer identity." - Jennifer Slate, UC Berkeley
"Being an overtly gay man in the States coming to Paris not only changes how you view the French LGBT community but how different and similar you are to them at the same time" - Carlos Turcios, UMBC
"This study experience taught me a lot about both French society as well as the diversity of the French and US LGBT community." - Andrew Deiner, UMBC
"What a great experience! It's a wonderful opportunity to take a relevant and exciting class about queer studies and to live, at the same time, in the Marais." - Guillaume Giraud, Université de Québec

University of New Haven Freshman Abroad – CEA Global Education partners with its School of Record – University of New Haven – to offer a Freshmen Abroad computer science/engineering and general studies program in Florence, Italy, or Seville, Spain. Incoming freshmen can elect to spend their first semester in college overseas taking CEA faculty-taught courses at the CEA Global Campus. Freshmen participate in a tailored orientation prior to standard semester students’ arrival. Their transition into college and spending their first semester abroad is based upon a CEA-developed Student Success Action Plan, a week-by-week plan designed to focus on common issues first-year students encounter in a college setting, as well as during study abroad. The plan is complemented by a high level of support and services geared toward study abroad experiences, including on-site advising, peer mentoring, and a variety of social and culture engagement opportunities.
