CEA Global Campus Mission

CEA Global Campus Mission

The mission of CEA's Global Campuses is to develop and deliver high quality, discipline-based academic programs that integrate the host culture and city into an active learning pedagogy.

Working to Achieve the Mission

The CEA Global Campus is part of the Global Education Network, yet is endowed with a distinct mission, given its centrality to CEA operations and study abroad programming at a worldwide network of CEA-managed facilities. The Global Campus mission is also a critical element in the School of Record relationship CEA has established with the University of New Haven (UNH). It is at Global Campus that CEA has the greatest responsibility for creating and assuring quality international education in study abroad. This mission guides our day-to-day work and sets benchmarks for assessing both programs and student learning outcomes.

Under the academic supervision of UNH, CEA develops and delivers its own study abroad programs, including:

  • Curriculum design
  • Student services programming
  • Housing integration into learning abroad
  • Active-learning pedagogical theory

All academic components are developed with support and approval from our School of Record, the University of New Haven, and all Global Campus operations are subject to UNH evaluations through self-study reporting and regular UNH site visits. All Global Campus operations are subject to UNH assessment through self-study reporting and periodic UNH site visits.

The Global Campus mission requires high quality academic programs. In practice, this means that Global Campus academic administrators, faculty, courses and facilities are reviewed and approved by the faculty of UNH. It also means that CEA carries out its study abroad programming according to CEA’s own core values. Finally, it means that CEA uses recognized industry standards as a guide for program design and delivery, such as the nine Standards of Good Practice for Education Abroad  of the Forum on Education Abroad  and the Eight Principles of Good Practice for All Experiential Learning Activities  by the National Society for Experiential Education.

One implicit element of the Global Campus mission is to ensure that CEA students transfer Global Campus coursework back to their home institution as credits towards their major, minor, or general university requirements. While credit transfer policies vary across institutions, CEA nevertheless strives to design courses that fulfill basic core courses in a variety of academic disciplines.

Part of the Global Campus mission is to use the host city, people and culture as both the subject and the object of course material, where appropriate. The city, people, and cultural life become a part of the instructional format and core course content. This means getting students actively engaged and involved in the local city and culture.

Finally, the term active learning conveys how instructors teach at CEA Global Campus. Our mission is to engage students directly in the creation and acquisition of knowledge, skills and attitudes through active and personal involvement in the learning process. We do this by using best practices in experiential education as established by NSEE (National Society for Experiential Education) and by integrating host city resources and cultural forces directly into core course content.
