The Spanish Language Studies program is designed for students of all
language levels who are interested in improving their language
skills. Your courses will focus on listening, speaking,
reading and writing. All students will take a placement
exam upon arrival to determine their language level. You
will be in class with other US and international students.
Classes meet for four hours in the morning, Monday through
Friday. At the end of your four week session, you will have
participated in 80 hours of coursework, which is generally
worth 5 semester credits in the US university system. Please
refer to the Courses
& Credits tab for specific course descriptions.
Housing
All CEA students will live in a homestay. Homestays may
consist of a single señora (with or without children)
or a traditional two-parent household. This housing option
allows students to continue practicing Spanish outside of
the classroom while learning about Spanish culture. Students
may be placed in either single or double rooms with another
CEA participant. All families are welcoming and generous
with their home, but participants should remember that they
are guests and will be expected to adapt to the traditions
and rules of their homestay.
You will be provided daily breakfast and dinner and laundry
service once a week. All homestays are located within San
Jose's residential neighborhoods and are within walking
distance from the university.

Description |
SPN 101
Basic Spanish I |
No previous knowledge of the Spanish language is
required for this level. The core of this class is
the development of oral skills. A wide variety of
activities are used which enable students to interact
immediately in simple everyday situations such as
ordering food, making hotel reservations, and doing
formal and informal interviews. Students will be introduced
to basic grammar rules including: ser/estar, pronouns,
gender and number agreement, prepositions, use of
definite/indefinite articles, and present, past and
future tenses in the indicative mood. Students will
be evaluated by participation, assignments, midterm
and final exam. (60 contact hours). The conversation
part of the course is intended to help students use
their basic listening and speaking skills to express
themselves in everyday situations. Students learn
greetings, descriptions, past tense narration, and
expressions of preference. They also learn how to
ask for and give information. They discuss travel,
housing, family, food, shopping, weather, social relations
and work in order to understand and manipulate a basic
conversation with native speakers. This course also
covers Spanish pronunciation.

Basic Spanish II |
This course is designed for students with a basic
knowledge of the language. Complemented by everyday
exposure to Costa Rican life, this course emphasizes
written exercises, grammatical structures, as well
as conversational fluency. Students will continue
to increase their vocabulary by participating in various
activities including discussions on political and
social issues. Basic grammar rules that will taught
include: present progressive, gustar/interesar, positive
tu and usted commands, and question and exclamatory
phrases. Students will be evaluated by participation,
assignments, midterm and final exam. The conversation
part of this course continues to emphasize conversational
Spanish. Extensive use is made of structured oral

Costa Ricans. Corrective phonetics, vocabulary development
and oral comprehension are refined.

Intermediate Spanish I |
This course is designed for students who have a fairly
good knowledge of the language. The course emphasizes
a review and practice of grammatical structures through
oral and written exercises. This review includes,
among other concepts, a concentration on the differences
between ser/estar, por/para, and preterite/imperfect.
In compact groups, students have the opportunity to
participate dynamically in class activities. Students
will be evaluated by participation, assignments, midterm,
written compositions and final exam. The primary goals
of the conversation part of this course are to help
students express themselves with confidence, to expand
their vocabulary, and to enhance their communicative
skills so that they are able to debate. Primary focus
is concentrated around everyday situations and students
are given the opportunity to practice both their listening
and speaking skills. In addition, Spanish pronunciation
is reviewed and practiced. Students compare and contrast
people, places, situations and customs. They discuss
ways to solve problems and talk about future vacations,
marriage and work plans. Movies and literature are
also topics for discussion.

Intermediate Spanish II |
This course is designed for students having a relatively
good knowledge of Spanish. The course is based on
reading exercises as well as simple text discussions.
Students will develop a much more complex vocabulary
and will be introduced to the personal pronoun vos,
impersonal "se", "perfect" tenses,
conditional tense, subjunctive mood, and comparative
structures. Cultural and social activities are widely
used as study material. Upon completion of this class,
students should be able to hold a simple conversation
and understand most everything they read. Students
will be evaluated by participation, assignments, midterm,
written compositions and final exam. The conversation
part of this course promotes facility in understanding,
speaking and writing the language. Emphasis is placed
on situational, everyday conversation by enriching
