Academic Focus
The Intensive Language program is designed for students at the high beginner level and above who wish to acquire and improve their French language skills in a short, intensive period. Students will enroll in one French language course which focuses on oral expression, vocabulary development and listening comprehension. KCC students will also participate in additional French Language instruction, provided by Renee Arnold, KCC French Language Faculty, for additional contact hours. Beginning French students will earn a total of 8 credits, based on 120 contact hours. Intermediate French students will earn a total of 6 credits, based on 90 contact hours. The program is 4-weeks in length.
Students may also participate in an optional 2-hour weekly workshop (8 hours total). The workshop is designed to complement a student's language learning and the focus of the workshop varies by language level. Beginners will focus on phonetics while intermediate students will focus on conversation. The workshop will appear on the student’s transcript, but will not be graded. Students may earn additional credit for this workshop; however, it is up to the discretion of the student’s academic advisor to determine how much credit will be awarded.
Schedule Summary
French language courses are held for 4 hours a day in the morning from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm, Monday through Friday. The KCC specific language instruction will meet for 2 hours a day, Monday through Friday. The exact schedule will be determined upon arrival. The workshop meets one afternoon a week for 2 hours from 2 pm to 4 pm. The day of the week the workshop meets will not be finalized until the program begins.
Course Registration
You will begin your session with a placement exam. You will then be placed in a language class with other students of your own language level. The Intensive Language program offers courses at four different language levels: beginner, intermediate, advanced and superior. In order to ensure that you receive credit for the level that you place into, it is in your best interest to have courses at several levels approved by your academic advisor prior to departure.
