Founded in 1967, Macquarie University is Sydney's third urban university, boasting a student population of over 29,000 students. Named after the prominent Governor Lachlan Macquarie, Governor of New South Wales (1809-1820) during the convict era, today Macquarie is a modern and progressive university. Macquarie University's international vision is to be a borderless university with particular outreach to the Asia-Pacific, with an increasing reputation for the development of graduates across the world who are well-prepared for the global society of the twenty-first century.
This beautiful university campus is surrounded by some of the most affluent areas of Sydney as well as bushlands of Lane Cove National Park. Featuring the work of artists from around the world, Macquarie's Sculpture Garden is the permanent exhibit of its kind on an Australian university campus. Students can easily make the 11 mile trip from this suburban campus to downtown Sydney using the city's bus system.
Macquarie's international student population, one of the largest in the country, is one of the reasons the university has been recognized as having the best internationalization on campus. As a study abroad student at Macquarie, you will be joining approximately 7,000 other students from around the world on campus. As a Macquarie student you will have full curriculum access, choosing courses from subject areas such as Accounting, Biology and Cultural Studies. In addition you have full access to university services such as computer labs, the Macquarie University Sports Association, student union, library and student health services. Study skills workshops, a Chaplaincy Center, on campus bank, bookshop and pharmacy are also available to you. Classroom Information
- International faculty from Macquarie University will teach your electives.
- Attendance in all classes is mandatory and monitored by each professor.
- Periodic exams, homework assignments and final exams will be administered.
- Teaching styles in Australia can be very different from those found in the US or Canada. Be prepared to adapt to the different classroom structures and coursework expectations for your school.
- Class size ranges between 20 and 300 students for lecture classes.
- You will be in class with Australian students and other international students from the US, Europe, Asia, Canada and other parts of the world.
Grading
The Australian grading system consists of a set of ordered categorized of grades, with criteria for their award and scores to differentiate achievement within each grading category. The grading system accommodates a variety of forms of assessment. It also accommodates changing expectations as students advance to higher level topics.
Macquarie University assessment is based on completion of assignments and essays which can vary between 1,500 and 4,000 words. There is usually a final examination or a long essay in lieu of an examination at the end of each unit. There is a great deal of individual study required at Australian universities. Most units do not have weekly class tests.

High Distinction (HD) 85-100%- denotes performance that meets all unit objectives in such an exceptional way and with such marked excellence that it deserves the highest level of recognition.
Distinction (D) 75-84% - denotes performance that clearly deserves a very high level of recognition as an excellent achievement in the unit.
Credit (CR) 65-74% - denotes performance that is substantially better than would normally be expected of competent students in the unit.
Pass (P) 50-64% - denotes performance that satisfies unit objectives.
Conceded Pass (CP) 45-49% - denotes performance that meets the unit objectives only marginally, and which is therefore unlikely to be adequate preparation for studies in this area.
Pass (S) - used for units where grading is on a Pass or Fail basis only
