Academic Focus

This program is designed for students at the beginning to high intermediate Spanish language proficiency who wish to focus their studies on Spanish language acquisition while taking electives focused on Latin American culture. All students will enroll in two Spanish language courses appropriate to their language level. Language courses focus on oral comprehension and expression, listening comprehension, grammar and composition. In addition, students can enroll in up to two elective courses taught in English or Spanish depending on the student’s language level. Electives allow students to explore Latin American history, society, and culture. This program offers a unique elective course called Cultures in Contact that is taught in both English and Spanish. The course, which combines in-class instruction with field work, helps students learn about and make connections within the local community. Furthermore, it provides students with the opportunity to practice their language skills outside of the classroom.

Early Start

This program also features a unique Early Start option offered in the fall semester. Students will arrive early and take a four-week intensive language preparation program comprised of two courses focused on grammar, conversation and listening comprehension. The early start program is designed to help students adjust to the university setting and prepare for the semester placement exam. It may also help students advance to the next language level for their semester studies. Please note, students interested in taking electives in Spanish are strongly encouraged to take the Early Start program to ensure they reach the required language level.

The contact hours for Spanish language courses vary but generally range from 64 to 90 hours per semester and are typically worth 4 to 6 credits each in the US semester system. Electives meet for 46 or 54 hours per semester and are generally worth 3 credits in the US semester system. Students receive a total of 12 - 18 credits per semester. Students participating in the Early Start option will receive an additional 90 contact hours of language instruction, which is usually worth 6 credits in the US semester system.

Schedule Summary

All courses will meet for 4-6 hours each week. Classes will be held on Mondays through Fridays throughout the day although most students are able to arrange a Monday – Thursday class schedule. Spanish language classes generally take place in the mornings and electives in the afternoon but class times may vary and final course schedules will be determined onsite.

Course Registration

Final course registration at the university will take place upon arrival in Viña del Mar. Before departing, students should submit their course preference forms that will be used in the registration process prior to their arrival in Viña del Mar. Students must enroll in two language courses and up to two electives each semester. To aid in the registration process, it is in the student’s best interest to have courses at different levels, as well as alternates, approved by their academic advisor prior to departure. Language level will be determined onsite by a placement exam. Any changes to course selections after registration has been finalized will be considered after the placement exam has taken place and must be coordinated through the onsite director in Viña del Mar.
