Academic Focus

The Ecology & Environmental Studies Program at Veritas University allows students of all language levels the unique opportunity to study ecology and the environment in Costa Rica, a renowned leader in the field of environmental conservation. You will take at least one four-week Spanish language course at the beginning of your trimester, focused on oral comprehension and expression, listening comprehension, and grammar components appropriate to your language level. You will then choose three English electives focused on ecology, biology, and environmental sciences. These electives often include a lab portion and/or field component that allows you to further explore the ecology, ecosystems, and environment of Costa Rica. You may also choose to substitute any of your electives with additional Spanish language courses, should you wish to continue practicing your Spanish during the trimester. This program offers you extraordinary insight into the rich biodiversity of Costa Rica while gaining knowledge of the Spanish language and Costa Rican culture.

Spanish language classes meet for a total of 80 contact hours for each 4-week block, which is generally worth 5 credits in the US semester program. Electives range from 48 – 60 contact hours, or 3 – 4 semester credits. Students will take either one language course (first 4-week block) and three electives, or two language courses and two electives for a total of 16 – 19 semester credits per trimester.

Schedule Summary

Language courses meet for four hours in the morning, Monday through Friday. Electives meet at various times in the afternoon, but typically only meet two or three days per week. Your final course schedule will be determined onsite.

Course Registration

All students are required to complete an elective selection form prior to departure. This form must be returned to the CEA Tempe office with your confirmation deposit, or no later than the application closure date for your program. You will automatically be registered for your language courses.

You will be given a language placement exam on the first day of class. Though you will register for courses prior to your departure for Costa Rica, final registration will not take place until after your language level has been assessed. You will receive further information regarding registration deadlines after acceptance to the program. To aid in the registration process, it is in your best interest to have courses, including alternates, approved by your academic advisor prior to departure. Any changes to your course selection after registrations have been finalized must be coordinated through the onsite director.
