The course emphasizes a review and practice of grammatical structures through oral and written exercises. This review includes, among other concepts, a concentration on the differences between ser/estar, por/para, and preterite/imperfect. In compact groups, students have the opportunity to participate dynamically in class activities. Students will be evaluated by participation, assignments, midterm, written compositions and final exam. The primary goals of the conversation part of this course are to help students express themselves with confidence, to expand their vocabulary, and to enhance their communicative skills so that they are able to debate. Primary focus is concentrated around everyday situations and students are given the opportunity to practice both their listening and speaking skills. In addition, Spanish pronunciation is reviewed and practiced. Students compare and contrast people, places, situations and customs. They discuss ways to solve problems and talk about future vacations, marriage and work plans. Movies and literature are also topics for discussion.
