SPN 101 Basic Spanish I
Host Institution Title: SPN Básico 1 gramática y conversación CEA Partner Institution: Veritas University Location: San Jose, Costa RicaPrimary Subject Area: Spanish Language & Literature Level(s): 100 Instruction in: Spanish Recommended Semester Credits: 5 Contact Hours: 80 Description No previous knowledge of the Spanish language is required for this level. The core of this class is the development of oral skills. A wide variety of activities are used which enable students to interact immediately in simple everyday situations such as ordering food, making hotel reservations, and doing formal and informal interviews. Students will be introduced to basic grammar rules including: ser/estar, pronouns, gender and number agreement, prepositions, use of definite/indefinite articles, and present, past and future tenses in the indicative mood. Students will be evaluated by participation, assignments, midterm and final exam. (60 contact hours). The conversation part of the course is intended to help students use their basic listening and speaking skills to express themselves in everyday situations. Students learn greetings, descriptions, past tense narration, and expressions of preference. They also learn how to ask for and give information. They discuss travel, housing, family, food, shopping, weather, social relations and work in order to understand and manipulate a basic conversation with native speakers. This course also covers Spanish pronunciation.
