Academic Focus

This program gives students full access to diverse summer course offerings at the University of Sussex, a university celebrated internationally for academic excellence. Courses chosen for offer during the summer session are taught by some of the same world-renowned faculty that teach at the university during the academic year and are offered in areas such as Art and Architecture, Science, Film Studies, Management and International Relations. Since its inception in 1999, the course list has now grown to over 60 courses. You will study at the University of Sussex's campus on the edge of the South Downs, just outside Brighton, one of Southern England’s most lively cities.

Summer students choose one course from the over 60 courses offered. Summer courses are worth 18 Sussex credits and usually transfer back to the US as 4.5 credit courses. Remember, it is up to the discretion of your academic advisor how many credits will be awarded.

Schedule Summary

Contact hours for each course vary and may be comprised of lectures, seminars and tutorials. The Sussex system of teaching is based around intensive, small-group learning and teaching activities. Due to the differences in the British higher education system, there is no standard for the number of days a week a course may meet. Class meeting times vary across departments and subject areas. You should expect the number of times you meet with your class to be different than what you are used to at your home institution. In choosing a science course you should be aware that you will have many more required class hours than students on humanities courses.

Registration

You will be required to submit your course selection and alternate to the CEA headquarter office prior to departure for England. Courses do fill up quite quickly for the summer sessions, so you are encouraged to submit your course choice as early as possible. There are no required courses. To aid in the registration process, it is in your best interest to have courses, including alternates, approved by your academic advisor prior to departure.
