As an organization that sends thousands of students abroad each year, CEA has captured a list of local secrets - a collection of discoveries from our students, resident staff, as well as other locals - that make this city unique. We hope you will find the information helpful and, at the every least, an interesting read.
Momma Cherri’s Soul Food Shack
Sometimes you just need a good ol’ greasy meal to keep you going! That is what
you’ll find at “Momma Cherri’s Soul Food Shack” in Brighton, which offers a
large selection of authentic dishes created in the southern states of America.
Some of the main dishes include jambalaya, catfish and fried chicken. No wonder
their motto is “You might come in skinny, but you ain’t goin’ out that way”.
While abroad, you might get a little homesick, but at least you can head to the
“shack” and relive that American cuisine!
Fringe Festival
Running concurrently with the Brighton Festival in May, the Brighton Fringe
Festival offers an up-and-coming selection of theatre, dance, comedy, street
arts, literature and more. This is an event you must not miss if you are in the
Brighton area in May! Buy tickets for the various events
online and check the artists that will be playing during the Fringe
Festival, as well as the venue location and time of the show. If you have
questions while you are onsite at the festival, feel free to stop in the
Brighton Visitor’s Information Centre, which is located close to the festival
venues.
Ashdowne Forest
Called one of the best kept secrets in East Sussex, Ashdowne Forest is 5,000+
acres of beautiful trees and excellent views, and is truly an area of
outstanding beauty! Aside from the thriving vegetation and the breathtaking
scenery, the Ashdowne forest is home to a variety of wildlife. You can decide
to be adventurous and go hiking, or you can just take in the beautiful scenery.
Just make sure that you bring your camera with you because there are gorgeous
scenes there that you will want to remember with photos!
Brighton Station Sunday Market
If you need to go shopping while in Brighton, stroll down to the Brighton
Station Sunday Market, which is open every Sunday. This market is essentially a
trunk sale, where the Brightonians fill their cars with a variety of items they
want to get rid of and sell them to other locals or tourists. Similar to a
garage sale in the US, this is a great place to shop for bargains, and you’ll
see some bargain hunters ready to shop in the wee hours of the morning. This
market tends to attract locals mostly because it is hidden behind the train
station; however, it should not be missed by tourists!
