Shakespeare & Elizabethan Literature

- There is a required lab fee used to provide access to a variety of productions that students will attend as part of the course. The fee is generally GBP150 (not to exceed that amount) and will be collected from students onsite. Description This course will help students understand the fascinating social and historical background to some of the most famous and compelling poetry and drama ever written. Students will read and watch performances of Shakespeare's plays after studying the conventions of Elizabethan poetry. Students will be introduced to the following topics: the power struggles between Elizabethan men and women, the influence of carnival and cross dressing, the use of sexual innuendo on Shakespeare's stage, the history and style of Elizabethan acting, the representation of witchcraft and the dramatization of rebellion and violent conflict.
