Academic Focus
This program is designed for students who want to earn credits towards their major, while having a true British university experience.
Students studying at Middlesex for a single semester choose their courses from a specialized portfolio of classes from across three academic areas: Business School, Arts and Education, and Health and Social Sciences. These courses have been hand selected in order to offer a broad range of subjects and disciplines. You will be studying alongside other study abroad students from all over the world.
Year students have the opportunity to choose their courses from the full range of subject areas and courses offered at Middlesex University. These courses span the entire academic year and are taken alongside British students as well as other international students.
A unique aspect of Middlesex is its multi-campus system. Each campus has its own personality and is located in suburban London with easy access to the city center. Both Semester and Year students will be assigned a home campus based on their course of study.
One year of coursework at Middlesex is worth 120 credits, made up of two semesters of 60 credits each. Most courses offered are worth 15 Middlesex credits or 4 US credits. Therefore, students will typically earn the equivalent of 16 US credits per semester session or a total of 32 US credits for the academic year. However, it is at the discretion of your academic advisor exactly how many credits will be awarded.
Schedule Summary
The number of contact hours for each course varies and may be comprised of a mixture of lectures, seminars and tutorials. Due to the differences in the British higher education system, there is no standard for the number of days a week a course may meet. Class meeting times vary across departments and subject areas. Expect the number of times you meet with your class to be different than what you are used to at your home institution. Although the number of contact hours, in class assessment and homework assignments may be fewer than you are used to, it would be a mistake to think that this means less work is required. In preparation for your classes, you are expected to read extensively, participate fully in discussions and develop your own ideas and arguments.
Registration
You will be required to submit your course selections and alternates to the CEA headquarter office prior to departure for London. This will allow you to be pre-approved by the departments and/or lecturers for entry into your chosen courses. When choosing courses, make sure you are looking at the campus designation. We strongly encourage you to take care in choosing your courses since if you decide to make changes upon arrival, you must complete this approval process on your own. Due to the travel time between campuses, you must choose a home campus and take the majority of your courses on that campus. Because your home campus also affects your housing, it is very difficult to change classes after arrival. Final course registration will take place during Orientation. While in London, you must enroll in four courses per semester. There are no required courses. To aid in the registration process, it is in your best interest to have courses, including alternates, approved by your academic advisor prior to departure.
