Academic Focus

The Global Futures program, offered jointly by CEA and FIE at the Foundation House Center in London, provides you with the unique opportunity to explore relevant urban and environmental issues within the context of globalization. The program employs a comparative and interdisciplinary approach to learning that combines classroom instruction with site visits and exploits London as a “learning laboratory” going beyond the classroom in a real and dynamic sense.

The required Global Futures courses will look at exciting themes such as processes of urban growth and technological change, economic restructuring and contemporary planning, contemporary social and cultural geographies, and sustainable management of the environment. You will also complete an undergraduate research component that introduces core research concepts and develops crucial research skills. As culmination of the course, you will complete an individual research project consistent with your interests and emphasizing engagement in the host culture and community. The foundation in research tools provided by this course will benefit you in writing your undergraduate thesis, in your graduate studies, or as you move into the professional world.

In addition to these required course components, you also have the opportunity to choose electives from a wide variety of courses ranging from Ethnic History of Modern Britain to International Trade and Media in Britain to name just a few.

As a CEA student in the Global Futures Program you will take one or two Global Futures courses, one to two elective courses and you will complete an individual research project. Each of the courses will meet for 45 contact hours and will be worth 3 semester credits. Students taking 4-5 courses at FIE will typically earn 12-15 credits within the U.S. semester system. However, it is up to the discretion of your home school's registrar how many credits will be awarded.

Schedule Summary

FIE's semester is divided into two phases. During Phase 1 you will complete your one to two elective courses, a 7-week Research Methods seminar and commence coursework in one to two Global Futures courses. You will be in class or on course-related visits and trips 4-5 days a week for several hours per day. During Phase 2 of the program you will conclude your Global Futures course(s) and complete a 7-week Research Project.

Course Registration

You will be required to submit your course selections to the CEA headquarter office prior to departure for London. We strongly encourage you to take care in choosing courses and alternates as there is no drop/add period after arrival. To aid in the registration process, it is also in your best interest to have courses, including alternates, approved by your academic advisor prior to departure.
