Academic Focus

This program is designed for students who want to earn credits towards their major, while participating in what is widely recognized - locally and internationally – as one of the leading integrated summer programs for university level study in the UK. Over 90 courses are offered, each chosen for its interest and appeal. This program offers you full immersion into the British education system by allowing you to take courses alongside British students, members of the local community as well as other international students. The summer school program is located on the Trent Park campus, a 60-acre country campus surrounded by 900 acres of woodland and meadows. In the past up to 1500 students, representing over 27 different countries, have participated in the summer program.

This program is offered on both a 3-week and 6-week basis. During the 3-week session you will take one course. During the 6-Week session, you have the opportunity to take either one or two courses. The majority of courses offered during the summer are worth 15 Middlesex credits, which are generally equivalent to 4 US semester credits. There are also non-credit bearing courses offered, most of which are introductory in nature and require no previous subject knowledge. However, other courses are more advanced and students may need some previous experience in the area. Students who select the Shakespeare in Performance course will be required to pay a supplemental fee to cover the cost of additional activities such as theater performances. Students studying during the 3-week session will generally earn between 0 and 4 US credits. During the 6-week session, students may earn as many as 40 Middlesex credits or as few as 0 credits. Please note that the number of US semester credits you will be awarded is up to the discretion of your academic advisor.

Schedule Summary

The number of contact hours for each course varies and may be comprised of a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials and some onsite visits. Courses offered at Middlesex University vary in length. Courses offered during the 3-week session generally run for the full length of the program. However, students studying during the 6-week session will find that while most courses are five or 6 weeks in length, some are only one to three weeks long. This makes it possible to take two courses consecutively instead of simultaneously. Most courses meet during the day between the hours of 9 AM and 5 PM but some are available in the evenings.

Please note: Depending on the nature of the subject area, some courses may involve more contact hours. For instance, a fine arts course which culminates in a finished piece of work might meet for several hours a day, five days a week. In addition to in-class work, you should expect to spend a significant amount of time on independent study and group work outside of class.

Regardless of your class schedule, all students taking credit-bearing courses are required to complete exams during the last few days of the session. This exam period is non-negotiable and must be completed in order to earn credit for the class.

Registration

You will be required to submit your course selections and alternates to CEA prior to departure for London. We strongly encourage you to take care in choosing your courses as registration prior to arrival is considered final. There are no required courses. To ensure the registration process runs smoothly, it is in your best interest to have courses, including alternates, approved by your academic advisor prior to departure. Students enrolling in the Shakespeare in Performance course will be invoiced for the supplemental fee.
