CEA Student Life: Aix-en-Provence Immersion Activities

Take advantage of the unique flavor Aix-en-Provence has to offer. CEA offers a variety of local immersion activities to match your interests. Whether you enjoy music concerts, clubs, sports, cooking classes, language exchanges or something entirely different, our resident staff can help you get involved in the local culture. Here are just some examples.

Dîner chez Christine

Students will enjoy an evening of good French food and fine conversation with Christine, a local lady that will cook dinner for students for 12€. Christine is a charming lady who loves meeting foreign students-- she loves cooking and entertaining chez elle-- so she combines these two interests and offers "Dîner Chez Christine” once a week. It is not a cooking class; it is like going to dinner at someone's house. She prepares a three-course dinner and when students arrive at 7:15 PM, everyone sits down to eat together and chat in French.

Polyglotte Café

The Polyglotte Café is held every Thursday evening at a local café, Le Festival. People of all nationalities come to hang out, have a drink and socialize. It is a great way of meeting the locals as well as people from other countries. The Aix CEA students say this is one of the best ways to meet French people in Aix.

AVF - (Accueil des Villes Françaises)

AVF (Accueil des Villes Françaises) is a club run by group of volunteers and its aim is to welcome newcomers (both French people and foreigners) and help students to get to know Aix and its surroundings and meet people. They have weekly meetings every Friday evening, and they organize various activities in and around Aix-– cinema outings, French conversation for foreigners, soirées, hiking, weekend trips etc. Membership costs around 18€ and plus personal participation fees for the activities (e.g. for the hikes students share the cost of gas etc-- it is not at all expensive).

La Cave

La Cave is a regular event every Tuesday evening in Aix, when the Parish cathedral of St. Sauveur organizes a mass at 7:00 PM in the square opposite the school. At 8:00 PM there is a group meal which costs 3€. Anyone is free to attend mass and/or the meal—one needn’t attend mass to enjoy the meal There is a mixture of French and foreign students, so this is a fantastic way to meet new people. La Cave also organizes outings during the school year.

Conversation Club

Students can take advantage of language exchanges by practicing French with locals who are learning English.

Volunteering Opportunities

Tutor school children at the Secours Catholique or serve food for the homeless at the Germain Nouveau. No volunteer opportunities are available during summer sessions.

Cours de Cuisine

Ghislaine Danielle introduces students to typical French cooking in her home by demonstrating how to make a delicious three course meal. Enroll in a series of four classes for 120€ or take just one class for 40€.

Cours de Patisserie

"Patisserie Française" chez Danièle. Learn to make typical French specialties and enjoy them over a cup of tea and good conversation. 10€ per lesson.

Wine Tasting

Students can learn about different wines from different regions of France while sampling cheese and French cold cuts. Additional fee of €20 per meeting.

Art Class

Students will study oil painting under the tutelage of a local well-known artist, Monique Faillard. A painter and a native of Aix-en-Provence, she has run the “Atelier du Sud” for thirty-four years. She will make students fall in love with the country side around Aix, either “on-site” or in her workshop, a provençal bastide with a garden, situated in the city centre. By helping students discover the techniques of oil painting they will develop a new conception of the art, allowing them to leave Provence with marvelous memories of their stay. The course is instructed in French, and students of all language levels are welcome to attend. The course will meet for a total of 10 hours spread out over 3 afternoons. Students of any skill level are welcome. Additional fee of 275 € (including all materials).

Theatre Class

Students will study theatre under Isabelle Pancol, a thirty year old native of Aix-en-Provence, an actress and a teacher of theatre. Her academic background includes theatre studies at the Ecole Florent in Paris and post-graduate theatre studies at the University of Quebec in Montreal. Since 2000 she has taught theatre classes in Aix to students of all ages; she believes that teaching theatre classes to foreign students helps them feel more at ease with the French language. The course is instructed in French and is open to students at the intermediate language level and above. The course will meet for a total of 12 hours (8 classes for 1.5 hours twice a week). Additional fee of 150 €.
