Academic Focus

The Intensive Language program at Stendhal University – Grenoble 3 is designed for students of all language levels who wish to focus their studies solely on the acquisition and/or improvement of their French language skills. The unique aspect of this program is that it is broken down into intensive month blocks. Each month, students will take one language course. At the end of the month, students will be evaluated and may move to a higher level. This allows students not only to earn credits for multiple language levels, but also to master a variety of French language concepts in a concentrated amount of time. All language courses focus on oral and written expression, vocabulary development and listening comprehension. Trimesters are comprised of 3 month blocks and semesters are comprised of 4 month blocks.

Each month-long language course typically meets for a total of 80 contact hours which is generally worth 5 credits in the US semester system. Based on the calendar, however, some months vary in length which may affect the total contact hours. In rare cases, language courses have met for 60 contact hours (4 credits) or 100 contact hours (6 credits). Students should refer to the course outline to verify the exact number of contact hours for their particular session. Note, it is up to the discretion of your academic advisor how much credit will be awarded.

Schedule Summary

Language classes meet 4 hours per day, Monday through Friday. 3 of these hours will be spent in the classroom and 1 hour will be spent in the language lab. Classes will be held either in the morning or afternoon based on the university’s discretion and will vary per session.

Course Registration

You will begin your session with a placement exam. You will be placed in a language class with other students of your own language level. In order to ensure that you receive credit for the level that you place into, it is in your best interest to have courses at several levels approved by your academic advisor prior to departure.
