Here's what Patrick has to say about the French Alps: Grenoble
Grenoble is considered to be a medium sized city with a metropolitan population of 160,000, and around 419,000 including the surrounding suburbs.
It is located in the Department of Isère in the Rhône-Alps region. The city is very flat; however, it is surrounded by three mountain chains: The Vercors to the west, the Belledonne to the east and the Chartreuse to the north. The color "chartreuse", in fact, originates from the famous drink, which is still made to this day by the same order of monks who have been living and working in the Chartreuse Mountains for over 900 years.
Grenoble is, of course, famous as well for its proximity to many well known ski resorts: Chamrousse, Les Sept- Laux, L’Alpe- d’Huez, and Les Deux-Alpes to name a few, plus many other downhill and cross-country resorts.
Travel from Grenoble to other European or French destinations is easy with its close proximity to: Lyon -1 hour; Geneva - 2 hours; Turin - 5 hours; Paris - 3 hours (by TGV) and the Côte d’Azur (Riviera) - only 5 hours south.
Students in Grenoble - there are 50,000 of them - participate in a rich student life, with a variety of support systems provided by the university, the city, and national governments.
