Academic Focus

The French Cultural Studies program offered in the summer at CEA GlobalCampus in Paris is intended for students of all language levels interested in learning not only about the history and culture of France, but also about current issues which shape daily life in France. A variety of courses are offered, from French Impressionism and French Cinema to Comparative Political Models and Urban Architecture. The diversity in curriculum allows students the flexibility to choose courses that best meet their individual academic and personal needs. Classes are instructed in English except for the French language courses. All electives offered at the CEA GlobalCampus in Paris are designed to help students gain insight into the history, culture and politics of France while allowing them to earn credits toward their major or graduation requirements.

Students can choose to enroll in the 1 course or 2 course option. Courses are available in subject areas such as History, Cultural Studies, French Language, Political Science, and Art History. French language courses are available throughout the summer for all language levels. Students are highly encouraged to take a language class to enhance their understanding of French culture; however, language courses are not required. The CEA GlobalCampus in Paris offers two 4-week summer sessions, one in June and one in July. Students can opt to participate in one session or two back-to-back sessions in order to earn additional credit.

The location of the CEA GlobalCampus in Paris, France also helps to frame the curriculum of the French Cultural Studies program. Courses are designed to make use of Paris as the "classroom". There is no better place than Paris, France to learn about French culture and language. Both in and out of class, students are encouraged to explore the city and draw connections between their first hand observations and the subjects they are studying.

All language courses and electives meet for a total of 45 contact hours and are generally worth 3 credits in the US semester system. Students enrolled in the 1 course option will earn 3 credits; whereas students in the 2 course option will earn 6 credits. Note: despite our recommendations, it is up to the discretion of your academic advisor how much credit will ultimately be awarded.

Schedule Summary

Classes meet 4 to 5 days a week for 2 ½ or 3 hours each session. Classes may be held in the afternoon or morning. Students will not receive their final class schedule until they arrive onsite.

Course Registration

You will register for courses, including alternates, prior to departure. During the pre-departure process, all students are required to complete a course selection form indicating their course preferences and alternates. Students are encouraged to submit their form as early as possible as popular courses fill up quickly. Based on the course selection form and course availability, a student's course registration will be finalized. With regard to language classes, students will take a placement exam upon arrival to confirm their language level. If their level is different than indicated on their application, adjustments will be made to the student's schedule to place them in the right language class. In order to ensure that you receive credit for your selected courses, it is in your best interest to have courses at several levels approved by your academic advisor prior to departure.
