CEA Partner Institution: CEA GlobalCampus: Paris Location: Paris, FrancePrimary Subject Area: Business Other Subject Area(s): Management Level(s): 400 UNH Course Code: BUS432 Instruction in: English Recommended Semester Credits: 3 Contact Hours: 45 Prerequisites: Introduction to Management Description This course in management strategy presents an overview of both contemporary leadership theory and recent academic research as a first step to helping you understand the principles and real-world practice of global leadership in complex organizational structures, both past and present.
What human qualities have and will continue to contribute to executive ability? What characteristics have enabled leaders to lead? What managerial attributes create order and direction in the affairs of diverse and differentiated men and women? These and other questions pertinent to effective leadership will be raised and answered as you seek to comprehend both the technical components and specific traits of leadership as well as the ineffable mystery of charisma in leadership personality.
As a step toward understanding, developing and progressively exercising your own executive ability, you will encounter extraordinary leaders from both past and present whose exercise of power, influence and leadership in governmental, non-governmental, transnational, and international business organization still stand as exemplary models of leadership. Political and military leaders- from Napoleon to De Gaulle, Henry V to Gandhi, or business and industrial leaders, from Bill Gates to Carlos Ghosn- all serve as useful and revealing case studies in leadership and effective decision-making. The selection of cross-cultural examples and case studies reflect the preoccupation of the course with looking at leadership from a global perspective.
Taken together such biographical case studies reveal that an effective theory of leadership is possible. Through these case studies examining leaders from different periods, sectors and industries, you will learn about the progression from Trait, Skill and Style Theories to Situational and Contingency Theories, and on to the more current theories that define leadership as a complex interpersonal relationship. The more contemporary cases examine crucial leadership tasks encountered by leaders such as managing employee performance in global businesses, dealing with conflict, and leading the process of organizational and procedural change. The dramatic transformations that contemporary organizations are undergoing continue to challenge the practice and analysis of effective leadership. Several issues related to changing organizations, particularly the functions of teams and non-hierarchical organizations, you will consider in detail.
To improve your own professional prospects and personal empowerment, particular emphasis will be placed on the application of theoretical models to self-diagnosis and the improvement of your own personal leadership skills.
The important role cultural plays on leadership effectiveness, both locally and globally, is something you will focus upon throughout the course.
