Description
This course takes a chronological look at France's artistic response to the social, economic and political forces of our troubled 20th century experience. The main movements and personalities of modernism in France will be identified and traced, while placing them within the larger context of artistic creativity outside of France, and by comparing them to alternative forms of aesthetic expression (literature, music, film, and fashion). From Art Nouveau of the 1900s to the diversity and anarchy of the 1990s, this course presents the many and surprising artistic movements as both commentaries on and reflections of the vicissitudes of 20th century life.
