Paris Housing

Number of Pictures:  of

Choose to live in one of the following housing options:

Although every attempt will be made to match each student's preferences with our housing options, roommate and housing assignments are based upon availability and other factors. Therefore, your housing preferences cannot be guaranteed. We encourage you to apply early as it will assist us in organizing your housing arrangements.

There are several things to think about when deciding which housing option is right for you. Many students who have only lived in dormitories may find apartments appealing. They want to experience the freedom and independence that comes with living in an apartment. However, with freedom comes responsibility. Students must shop and cook for themselves and deal with maintenance issues.

Shared Apartments

Apartment living in Paris is a wonderful way to see the city while maintaining your sense of independence. This housing choice is for students who are interested in taking advantage of and maintaining a larger living space. Ideally, you would choose this option if you have already lived in an apartment and are familiar with the responsibilities that come with living in an apartment, such as upkeep and cleaning. As Paris is a large, metropolitan area, students will be housed in various neighborhoods throughout the city. In the past, students have lived in several arrondissements (districts), such as the 5th, 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th. All students should expect to commute to their classes. Typically, students will live within 30 - 40 minutes by metro or bus from the CEA GlobalCampus: Paris, the Sorbonne and the Catholic University of Paris. Since all of the apartments have furnished kitchens, a meal plan is not provided with this option. Apartments may house from two up to six students.

Residence Halls

There are various residence halls in which CEA students have enjoyed living, located in the 8th and the 14th arrondissement of Paris. A residence hall is ideal for students who would like to live in a communal setting and have the chance to meet a variety of students from all over the world. CEA residence halls are typically a half hour metro ride from the CEA GlobalCampus: Paris, the Sorbonne and the Catholic University of Paris. Meal plans vary depending on which residence hall you are assigned. Students in residence halls will receive 15 meal tickets per month to be used at local eateries and some shops.

French Style Residence Halls (not available for July programs)

CEA has partnered with a residence hall which we classify as “French Style” because it has a variety of features which differentiate it from our standard residence halls. For example, students have the opportunity to interact and even live with French students in double rooms (based on availability). French students living in this dorm are very academically oriented and they attend many different schools. For this reason, this housing option is ideal for students who are interested in immersing themselves in the French language and the typical life of a French student in Paris. This residence hall is located in the 11th arrondissement of Paris near Père Lachaise Cemetery and very close to the Bastille Area. Typically, you will be located within 30 - 40 minutes by metro or bus from the CEA GlobalCampus: Paris, the Sorbonne and the Catholic University of Paris. Your meal plan will include breakfast and dinner during the weekdays and hot drinks served for breakfast on the weekends. For those who prefer to cook, students also have access to a common kitchen.

In the French Style Residence Hall, students have a curfew of 12:30 AM on week nights and 1:30 AM on Friday and Saturday nights. The hall also has a permanent in-house staff as well as a night guard who has a room on the ground floor. Students can refer to this guard for any concerns or emergency needs.

Homestays

Staying in a homestay is a great way to complement your classroom study. This housing option is ideal for students who wish to immerse themselves in a cultural and linguistic experience. Living with a French family will give you insight as to how Parisians live their daily lives and provide the daily contact with French culture requisite to improving your French language skills. Homestays are located all across the city in safe residential neighborhoods, a half hour metro ride of the CEA GlobalCampus: Paris, the Sorbonne and the Catholic University of Paris. All bedrooms are single rooms, but there may be other international students in the home. Continental breakfast is provided daily. Students are also provided two meals per week or, in certain cases, will receive meal tickets which can be used at government subsidized university restaurants. Most homestays consist of a two-parent household, but some may be single or retired women whose children have grown up and moved out. No matter what the configuration of the homestay, all enjoy having students live with them and sharing their culture. All families are welcoming and generous with their home, but participants should remember that they are guests and will be expected to adapt to the traditions and rules of their host family.

Independent Living

CEA highly recommends that students live in the housing provided. Requests for permission to arrange independent housing must be made on the online housing or paper application form as determined by your program no later than the application closure date. For academic year students, requests for permission to arrange independent living arrangements for the second semester must be made no later than the second semester's application closure date. Students whose requests are approved will receive a rebate for housing. CEA resident directors will not provide assistance with independent housing and will not speak or act on behalf of any student who chooses to pursue such arrangements. Rebates are not granted for students who move out of their CEA housing or choose to pursue independent living arrangements after the application closure date.
