Academic Focus

The French Language, Art History and Photography program at CERAM-EAI offered in June is designed for students of the beginning language level who are interested in acquiring basic French language skills, while exploring the history, culture and beauty of France and the Riviera through electives offered in English.

This distinctive program offers study abroad students the opportunity to choose courses that best meet their individual academic and personal needs with courses offered in French language, art history and photography.

Students can choose to enroll in a 1 course or 2 course option. Students are highly encouraged to take a language class; however, language courses are not required. The Intensive French Language course meets for 12 hours per week, or 48 hours total and the course is generally worth 3 credits in the US semester system. All language courses focus on oral and written expression, vocabulary development and listening comprehension. Art History and Photography courses are taught in English and each meet for 48 hours and they are generally worth 3 credits in the US semester system. However, it is up to the discretion of your academic advisor how much credit will be awarded.

A region that has attracted renowned artists such as Picasso, Matisse and Chagall with its penetrating light and vivid colors, the French Riviera provides an ideal setting for students to explore and develop their visual interpretations and acquire a good working knowledge of the French language if they so wish.

Schedule Summary

French Language classes meet Monday through Thursday from 9 AM until noon. Elective courses meet Monday through Thursday for 3 hours in the afternoon, although study trips and other required fieldwork may occur on Fridays.

Course Registration

Students must register for courses prior to departure for the French Riviera. A course selection form will be posted to your MyCEA Account, which should be completed no later than the program closure date. You will begin your session with a language placement exam, and you will be placed in a language class with other students of your same level. In order to ensure that you receive credit for the level you place into, it is in your best interest to have courses, including alternates, approved by your academic advisor prior to submitting your course selection form.
