Academic Focus

This program is designed to help students develop studio art skills and is appropriate for both studio art majors and non-studio art majors alike. You may choose to take either one or two courses per summer session. However, due to the intense time commitment required to take a studio art course, you may only choose one studio art course per session. If you do wish to take two courses, you may compliment your studio art course with an elective chosen from the other courses on offer. Non-studio art courses offered during the summer include Art History, Italian Language, History and Humanities. All studio art courses and electives are taught in English and combine classroom study with onsite lectures and excursions, making "Florence" the true classroom.

Courses offered during the summer sessions are generally worth 3 credits in the US semester system. Studio art courses will meet for a total of 90 contact hours and are generally worth 3 credits. Non-studio art courses generally meet for a total of 45 contact hours and are worth three credits in the US semester system. However, it is up to the discretion of your academic advisor how many credits will be awarded. Credits for this program will be awarded on a Columbia College Chicago transcript. Please see the Partner Institution page for more information Columbia College Chicago.

Schedule Summary

During the summer classes meet daily, Monday through Thursday. Studio Art courses generally meet twice a day for a total of 35 hours weekly. Non-studio art courses meet once daily, for a total of 8 hours weekly. Class times alternate between morning and afternoon meetings.
