Description
A uniquely hands-on and up-close study of the art and architecture of the early Florentine Renaissance (ca.1300-1500), analyzing the sources, styles and iconography of the works of the masters. In order to discover how and why the city of Florence produced so many important Renaissance artists, like Donatello and Botticelli, you will combine site visits, illustrated class discussions, journal entries and independent research with active exercises and first-hand experience in the museums and workshops of the city. A special class day trip to the city of Siena in the company of your professor will also give you a chance to explore masterpieces of Sienese art at first hand in the cathedral, cathedral museum and town hall museum.

As well as conducting many of your onsite seminars inside major galleries such as the Uffizi, Bargello, Cathedral Museum, San Lorenzo and the Medici Palace, you will also be taken behind the scenes in the company of experts on a rare visit to the city's restoration labs to discover the techniques of the great masters and see for yourself how the works of Renaissance paintings and sculptures are restored, including Giotto's Ognissanti Crucifix and Fra Angelico's Linaioli Tabernacle.
