Shared Apartments
All CEA in Florence apartments are located in the historical center of the city, near such jewels as the Duomo, Palazzo Pitti, San Marco, and the Ponte Vecchio! All apartments are in walking distance of the CEA office and of the school you will be attending during your study abroad session. The walking distance time varies; however, it never exceeds a maximum of twenty-five minutes. We at CEA in Florence believe that the independence of living in an apartment in the city will give you the opportunity to get to know your neighbors, your host community, and all of the wondrous things that a typical Florentine way of life has to offer you!
Homestay - Additional Fee*
CEA Florence students may choose a homestay experience with a Florentine family. This housing option is ideal for students who wish to immerse themselves in a cultural and linguistic experience and learn about Italian customs, tradition and daily life. All CEA families are welcoming and generous with their home, but participants should remember that they are guests and will be expected to adapt to the traditions and rules of their host family. Both single and double rooms are available and participants generally share a room with one or more students of the same gender.
Students placed in families within the historical center will be at walking distance to the Global Campus, and the commute on foot will be no greater than 25 minutes. Some homestay families may be located beyond the historical center, and therefore in the greater Florence area. Those students will be well linked to the city center by public transportation, and their commute via bus and walking will not exceed 35 minutes.
The host family provides breakfast from Monday through Friday and dinner from Sunday through Thursday. Families can also accommodate vegetarian and gluten free diets if requested in advance. Lunch is not provided but students may occasionally use the kitchen. While a washing machine will be available for your use, internet access cannot always be guaranteed. The majority of host families are composed of a two-parent household, while some may be single or retired women: all families are chosen based on their friendliness, hospitality, cooking, cleanliness and location and they are carefully selected by a CEA representative to guarantee students a supportive and welcoming environment.

*We occasionally are allocated apartments that happen to have a single bedroom. If a single is of interest to you, please indicate this on your Online Housing Application in the “Additional Comments and Requests” section. Single rooms are limited, and their number varies per semester. Allocation of a single room will be based on availability and date of request. Therefore, we cannot guarantee that a student’s request to be placed a single room will be fulfilled.
**Internet access in homestays is limited. Should internet access at home be indispensible, CEA suggests that students invest in a USB antenna prepaid with internet access minutes (or in some cases unlimited surfing). CEA onsite staff will help students find locations with recommendable offers.
°Families will provide breakfast from Monday through Friday, and dinner from Sunday through Thursday. Lunch is not included.
‡Kitchen availability in the homestay home will be determined through your own conversations with your host family.
†The family’s telephone will only be available for you to receive calls for emergencies.
Independent Living
CEA highly recommends that students live in the housing provided. Requests for permission to arrange independent housing must be made on the online housing or paper application form as determined by your program no later than the application closure date. For academic year students, requests for permission to arrange independent living arrangements for the second semester must be made no later than the second semester's application closure date. Students whose requests are approved will receive a rebate for housing. CEA resident directors will not provide assistance with independent housing and will not speak or act on behalf of any student who chooses to pursue such arrangements. Rebates are not granted for students who move out of their CEA housing or choose to pursue independent living arrangements after the application closure date.
