Academic Focus
The Italian Language & Culture program in the summer offers a rich selection of courses allows you to gain special insight into the worlds of art, culture and business, while developing your Italian language skills.
Both in and out of class, students are encouraged to explore the city and draw connections between their first hand observations and the subjects they are studying. By studying the history of the center of Western Civilization, you are encouraged to look to the future by learning about the past. Through courses in contemporary Italian culture and business you will gain valuable skills for the global marketplace as well as develop the international cultural fluency required to communicate and function effectively in an increasingly globalized world. No matter what you choose to study, this program takes advantage of our location, offering traveling seminars to some of the world’s most famous museums and monuments, including the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica, and the Coliseum and to dozens of lesser-known churches, galleries and monuments throughout the city and beyond.
While not a required component of this program, Italian language is offered both sessions with a special focus offered during the June session. Language courses focus on oral comprehension and expression, listening comprehension and grammar components appropriate to your language level. Students studying during the June session have the opportunity, not only to study Italian at the High Intermediate or Advanced level, but also to add an additional three credit language course focused on conversation to their program.
The ideal location of the CEA GlobalCampus in Rome, Italy, also helps to frame the curriculum of this program. That means that all elective courses are designed to make use of Rome as the "classroom", presenting you with constant opportunities to actively develop your language skills and to apply your understanding of Italian culture at its heart.
You have the opportunity to choose to take either one or two courses per session. Most courses meet for a total of 45 contact hours and are generally worth three credits in the US semester system. However, it is up to the discretion of your academic advisor how many credits will be awarded.
Schedule Summary
During the summer, the majority of courses are offered Monday through Thursday and meet for two hours a day. Some courses are offered for longer periods of time, but meet fewer times during the week. Some courses may meet on Fridays.
Course Registration
You will be asked to indicate your course preferences prior to your departure for Italy. Students choosing to study Italian language will have their level confirmed by an onsite language placement exam after arrival. To aid in the registration process, it is in your best interest to have courses, including alternates, approved by your academic advisor prior to departure.
