Academic Focus

The Liberal Arts and Sciences Program is offered jointly by the CEA Global Campus in Rome and John Cabot University (JCU). The program is intended for students of all language levels who are interested in taking classes at the Global Campus while also experiencing the broad curriculum and busy atmosphere of a large, degree-granting university with an international student body. The program has been specifically designed so that courses at both schools complement one another. By participating in this program, you benefit from the unique qualities and distinct learning environments of each institution.

Program Goals

Through formal and informal learning connected to the host city, people and culture; and by applying appropriate cognitive, affective, behavioral, ethical and intercultural tools; students will develop and articulate:

  • discipline-based knowledge in the liberal arts and sciences;
  • analytical insight into salient cultural differences in the host country’s approach to concepts and issues within these fields, all considered within the larger context of globalization and;
  • Italian language and/or intercultural communication skills.

If you have never before taken an Italian language course, you are required to take Beginning Italian I, which focuses on basic communication, listening comprehension and grammar. In addition, you will choose 1-3 Global Campus electives. Elective courses, such as Living Italy, introduce you to aspects of the local culture, which will help you better understand your new surroundings. In addition, a wide variety of courses is available in other subjects such as Archaeology, Art History, Cultural Studies, Business and International Relations. Electives are taught in English, allowing students of all language levels to earn credits toward their major or graduation requirements.

You will also enroll in 1 or 2 electives taught at JCU. Courses are available in a wide range of subject areas within the Humanities, Liberal Arts, and Sciences such as Art History, English Literature, Mathematics, Business, and Computer Science. John Cabot University courses are taught in English, allowing students of all language levels to earn credits toward their major or graduation requirements.

If you have already taken a course in Italian language, you will choose 2-3 Global Campus electives. Elective courses, such as Living Italy, introduce you to aspects of the local culture, which will help you better understand your new surroundings, and you might want to choose an Italian language course to improve your skills.

Students will receive a transcript from JCU for all coursework successfully completed at JCU.

Beginning Italian I meets for a total of 60 contact hours and is generally worth 4 credits in the U.S. semester system. All other Global Campus and JCU courses offered by this program meet for a total of 45 contact hours and are generally worth 3 credits in the U.S. semester system. This program requires that students enroll in a total of 4 or 5 courses, which means they can earn from 13 to 16 semester credits. However, it is up to the discretion of your academic advisor how much credit will be awarded. Transcripts for Global Campus courses will be issued by the University of New Haven. Students taking Theology courses at the Global Campus will receive a transcript from Providence College.

Schedule Summary

Semester classes at the Global Campus meet once or twice per week for a total of 3 contact hours. Classes are typically held Monday through Thursday although study trips and other required fieldwork may occur on Fridays or weekends. Classes are offered at various times throughout the day. Class timetables will be released approximately three months before the program closure date, and your final course schedule will be posted to your MyCEA Account around two weeks before the program start date.

Course Registration

Students must register for courses prior to departure for Rome. A course preference form will be posted to your MyCEA Account when the GlobalCampus course timetable is released. This form should be completed upon submission of your program confirmation but no later than the program closure date. You will be sent the John Cabot schedule when it is released (generally one month before the program begins), from which you should select the 1-2 courses you prefer as well as alternates. All classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis, so it is in your best interest to submit your course preference forms as early as possible. Your final schedule may be subject to change in the event of conflicts, course cancellations and closures.

Course preferences for electives are considered final when submitted to CEA. For language courses, you will indicate an estimated level on your course preference form, but you will take a language placement exam onsite. Registration for your language course will then be adjusted as necessary to coincide with the results of your exam. To aid in the registration process, it is in your best interest to have courses, including alternates, approved by your academic advisor prior to submitting your course preference form.
