CEA/Providence College Center for Theology and Religious Studies

The CEA/Providence College Center for Theology and Religious Studies was established in 2010 at the CEA Global Campus in Rome. This unique collaboration combines CEA’s outstanding student admissions, academic management and support with Providence College’s distinguished academic leadership and religious tradition. The Center opens the door to semester-length study abroad opportunities to study theology and religion in the heart of Rome, a cultural and religious crossroads, and center of the Roman Catholic Church.

With this great city as your classroom, enjoy a singular opportunity to further your academic pursuits and actively improve your language skills immersed in a historic, cosmopolitan setting with few equals. Courses offered in both Italian and English are held at Rome’s Villa Ferretti (the location of CEA’s Global Campus) and significant sites in and near the Eternal City, including the Vatican Museums, St. Peter’s Basilica, and the Catacombs of San Callisto. Classes are taught by local experts and scholars, as well as visiting Providence College faculty.

After the successful completion of the semester at the CEA/Providence College Center for Theology and Religious Studies, students will receive two transcripts: one from Providence College (for one or more theology/religious studies courses), and one from the University of New Haven (for language and other area studies courses).

All the theology/religious studies courses available to Center students (The New Testament in the Eternal City; The Papacy & the Roman Church; The Catholic Church in the World; and Christianity & World Religions) have been approved and are transcripted by Providence College (PC). Providence College is a four-year, coeducational, Roman Catholic college of the liberal arts and sciences located in Providence, Rhode Island, and accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). Therefore, credits earned in these theology/religious studies courses are easily transferable to US-accredited institutions. Learn more about Providence College.

Other area studies and language courses taught at the CEA Global Campus in Rome have been designed in conjunction with, and approved by, the University of New Haven (UNH). In addition, faculty appointments have been approved by UNH for the language and non-theology course electives (faculty appointments for theology/religious studies electives are approved by Providence College. Learn more about Providence College Faculty). Located in Connecticut, the University of New Haven is a student-focused, comprehensive university and is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). The agreement between CEA and UNH follows the highest standards of good practice in education abroad and satisfies the rigorous requirements of the University's institutional accreditor. Therefore, credits earned in other area studies and language are easily transferable to US-accredited institutions. Learn more about UNH's service as the School of Record for CEA.

Completion of a course is defined as a receipt of a letter grade (A+ to F) as opposed to Withdrawal or Incomplete.

In order to determine a quality point ratio, each letter grade from a completed course is assigned a quality point value. The quality point value for each grade earned during a semester is multiplied by the number of semester hours assigned to that course. The sum of these points is the total number of quality points earned during the semester. It is divided by the number of semester hours completed to obtain the quality point ratio (QPR).
