Academic Focus
The Intensive Spanish Language Program at the University of Guadalajara is designed for students of all language levels who are dedicated to acquiring and improving their language skills. Your language courses will focus on oral comprehension and expression, listening comprehension and grammar components appropriate to your language level. Courses are taught in 5-week blocks in September, January, June and July and for 2-week blocks in January and June.
If you choose a 5-week block you will take two language courses during each block. You may chose to substitute one Spanish course from a list of several electives in a variety of subject areas including Mexican culture, political science, and art history. Please note that electives are open to students at the advanced language level and will only open with a minimum of five students. If you choose a 2-week block you will take one language courses during each block.
All courses, both language and elective, meet for 50 contact hours each session. At the end of the session, students choosing the 5-week block will have taken two courses for a total of 100 contact hours, which is generally worth 6 credits in the US semester system. The transcripts will reflect all levels taken and two individual grades. At the end of the 2-week block, students will have earned 3 credits based on one language course at 50 contact hours.
Schedule Summary
During the 5-week block, each course meets for two hours in the morning, Monday through Friday. During the 2-week block, the language course meets for five and one half hours per day in the afternoon, Monday through Friday.
Course Registration
You will begin your session with a placement exam. You will then be placed in classes with other students of your own language level. The Intensive Spanish Language program offers courses at ten different language levels. In order to ensure that you receive credit for the level that you place into, it is in your best interest to have courses at several levels approved by your academic advisor prior to departure.
