Academic Focus

The Intensive Spanish Language Program at the University of Guadalajara is designed for students of all language levels who are dedicated to acquiring and improving their language skills. Your language courses will focus on oral comprehension and expression, listening comprehension and grammar components appropriate to your language level. Each trimester consists of two 5-week blocks. You will take two language courses during each 5-week block. You will be tested at the end of each block and may move up into higher levels during the trimester. This structure combined with your immersion experience in Guadalajara provides you the opportunity to advance your language skills at an accelerated pace, as well as gain insight into the Spanish culture. You may choose to substitute one Spanish course per five block from a list of several electives in a variety of subject areas including Mexican culture, political science, and art history. Please note that electives are open to students at the advanced language level and will only open with a minimum of five students.

All courses, both language and elective, meet for 50 contact hours each 5-week session. At the end of the trimester program, students will have taken four courses for a total of 200 contact hours, which is generally worth 13 credits in the US semester system. The transcripts will reflect all levels taken and four individual grades.

Schedule Summary

Each course meets for two hours in the morning, Monday through Friday.

Course Registration

You will begin your session with a placement exam. You will then be placed in classes with other students of your own language level. The Intensive Spanish Language program offers courses at ten different language levels. In order to ensure that you receive credit for the level that you place into, it is in your best interest to have courses at several levels approved by your academic advisor prior to departure.
