Academic Focus

The Integrated Studies Program at the University of Guadalajara is designed to give students at an advanced level of Spanish the opportunity to participate in a full immersion experience within a Mexican University. Through this program you have the opportunity to take classes with Mexican students in subjects such as History, Literature, and Political Science at the Centro Universitario de Ciencias Sociales y Humanidades (CUCSH), one of the 6 thematic campuses of the University of Guadalajara.

Early Start

This program also features a unique Early Start option, where you will arrive early and take a two week intensive language preparation course taught at the university’s Centro de Estudios Para Extranjeros (CEPE). This course is focused on grammar and conversation and is designed to help you be successful in your university courses.

Courses offered at CUCHS generally have both a theory and practical component. The contact hours for each course are made up of hours in both categories. Contact hours per course vary and typically are between 42 and 126. Students generally take between three and five electives and earn between 11 and 18 credits. The Early Start option, taught at CEPE, runs for 50 hours and is typically worth 3 credits within the US semester system.

Schedule Summary

The number of contact hours for each course varies and may be comprised of a mixture of lectures, seminars and tutorials. Due to the differences in the Mexican higher education system, there is no standard for the number of days a week a course may meet. Class meeting times vary across departments and subject areas. Expect the number of times you meet with your class to be different than what you are used to at your home institution. In preparation for your classes, you are expected to read extensively, participate fully in discussions and develop your own ideas and arguments.

Course Registration

All students are required to complete an elective selection form prior to departure. This form must be returned to the CEA Tempe office with your confirmation deposit, or no later than the application closure date for your program. Final course registration will take place during Orientation in Guadalajara. There are no required courses.
