Founded in 1364 by King Kazimierz the Great as Krakow Academy, Jagiellonian University (JU) is the oldest university in Poland and ranks highly among Europe’s elite universities. With a student body of over 40,000, today JU is renowned as a center for academic excellence. Accredited by the Polish Ministry of Education as a degree granting institution of higher learning, the university has 15 faculties: Law and Administration, Medicine, Pharmacy and Medical Analysis, Health Care, Philosophy, History, Philology, Polish Language and Literature, Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science, Mathematics and Computer Science, Chemistry, Biology and Earth Sciences, Management and Social Communication, International and Political Studies, Biotechnology.

Jagiellonian University's distinguished alumni include Nicolaus Copernicus (1491-95) and Pope John Paul II (1938-39, 1942-46). The university library (Biblioteka Jagiellońska) is the largest in the country, with almost 5.5 million volumes. Its extensive collection of priceless medieval manuscripts includes De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestibus, (On the Heavenly Revolutions of the Earth), by Copernicus.

Students will take classes through Jagiellonian University's School of Polish Language and Culture which was founded in 1969 as an inter-disciplinary research and teaching center of the university. It is the main research and teaching center in the country for all issues Polish and the oldest, largest and most experienced center for teaching Polish as a foreign language in the country. In 2000 the Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs awarded the school with a prestigious honorary diploma for outstanding achievements in promoting Polish culture abroad. In 2002 and 2005 the European Commission granted the School the European Label Award for innovative initiatives in language teaching.

CEA students will have access to all the JU facilities including a student ID, computer lab, libraries, study rooms, cafeteria, hairdressers, bank, post office, convenience store and activities and sports organized by the Student Council. CEA students have ample opportunity to meet and interact with their Polish peers since there are a large number of Polish students working at the summer school and living in the student residence.

Classroom Information

  • Polish faculty from Jagiellonian University School of Polish Language and Culture will teach your language courses and electives.
  • Periodic exams, homework assignments and final exams will be administered.
  • Attendance in all classes is mandatory and monitored by each professor.
  • Teaching styles in Poland are somewhat different from those found in the US or Canada. Be prepared to adapt to the different classroom structures and coursework expectations for your school.
  • Class size ranges between 10 and 20 students for language courses and between 5 and 30 students for your electives. You will be in class with Czech and international students from the US, Europe, Canada and other parts of the world.

Grading Policy

Final course grades are based on a 100-point scale with a corresponding letter and verbal grade, very similar to the US system:

  • Attendance and class work (20%)
  • Midterm exam (30%)
  • Final exam (50%)

Students may add or drop a course during the first days of the program. After this deadline students must adhere to the course schedule selected.

Please note that this grading scale is recommended, but final credit and grade evaluation is ultimately determined by a student's home university.
