2008 July 4-Week - Course Description
Russian Culture
CEA Partner Institution: St. Petersburg Polytechnic University Location: St. Petersburg, RussiaPrimary Subject Area: Cultural Studies Level(s): 100 Instruction in: English Recommended Semester Credits: 3 Contact Hours: 48 Prerequisites: No prior knowledge of Russian language, literature or history is required. Description Students examine major developments in Russian culture that have shaped Russian civilization throughout the past millennium, using literary texts, music, film, visual arts and historical works. Special emphasis is on the architecture of St. Petersburg, Moscow, and the ancient city of Pushkin; Russian painting, including icon painting; Russian folk and classical music; the "Golden Age" of Russian literature (Pushkin, Gogol and Dostoevsky); the "Silver Age" of Russian poetry (Akhmatova, Blok, Pasternak). The final part of this course focuses on contemporary Russian life with an overview of the major events characterizing Russia's transition to democracy and a market economy. Lectures are held two afternoons a week for a total of 16 hours. Course-related site visits and excursions are held three or four afternoons per week for a total of 32 hours and will include visits to palaces, museums, churches, and other important cultural and historical sites in St. Petersburg. A weekend excursion to Moscow is included. Lectures, site-visits and excursions are conducted in English.
