Academic Summary
This program is intended for students who wish to take a Russian language course and acquire an introduction to over 1000 years of Russian culture through a range of lectures and study visits. Open to all language levels, the Russian language course will focus on listening, comprehension, conversation, and grammar. Your culture course, taught in English, will introduce you to Russian culture from the 9th century to the present through lectures on art, literature, architecture, history and music. Through this course you will visit palaces, museums, churches, and other important cultural and historical sites in St. Petersburg, Russia's "City of Culture." Longer trips to Moscow and Staraya Ladoga will provide you the opportunity to explore the culture of other regions of this vast country. This program gives you the unique opportunity to learn about Russian language and culture through the living classroom of St. Petersburg.
You will take two courses while in St. Petersburg; one Russian language course and one Russian Culture course. Both courses will meet for a total of 48 hours and will typically be worth 3 credits within the US semester system. However, it is up to the discretion of your academic advisor how much credit will be awarded.
Schedule Summary
The Russian Language Course will meet for 12 hours per week in the morning for a total of 48 hours.
The Russian Culture course will meet 2 days a week in the afternoon for a total of 16 hours. This course also includes related site visits and excursions which are held three afternoons per week for 32 hours.
Language courses are generally held in the morning and culture courses in the afternoon.
Course Registration
You will begin your session with a placement exam. You will then be placed in classes with other students of your own language level. In order to ensure that you receive credit for the level that you place into, it is in your best interest to have courses at several levels approved by your academic advisor prior to departure.
