Here's what Gerry has to say about St. Petersburg
What better place to experience 1000 years of Russian culture and history than the imperial city of St. Petersburg, one of the most spectacular and impressive cities in the world.
St. Petersburg has an air of grace and elegance with its huge squares, wide boulevards, pretty canals and ornate bridges. Its world-class museums, elegant palaces and stunning architecture are second-to-none, while its lively arts, café and music scene and vibrant student nightlife will keep you busy throughout the program.
You will be amazed at the State Hermitage museum, which is housed in the former Winter Palace of the Tsars and boasts a collection of over 2.7 million exhibits from virtually every culture ever known and from every age. It also features the world's largest collection of Rembrandts and French Impressionist art to be found under one roof. It is said that it would take over 150 years to visit the museum’s entire collection, spending 2 minutes in front of each exhibit for 8 hours a day!
Other highlights of the cultural program include visits to Yusupov Palace, where Rasputin was murdered in 1916; the Church of the Resurrection, also known as the Church on Spilled Blood because it is built on the site of the 1881 assassination of Czar Alexander II - its colorful onion domes outrival Moscow's St. Basil's; the State Russian Museum, which offers a thorough overview of Russian art; the Mariinsky theater, home of the world-renowned Kirov Ballet; and Peterhof, former summer residence of the Russian tsars during the 18th and 19th centuries.
CEA will also take you on a journey to Medieval Russia to visit one of its most ancient and most magnificent cities – Novgorod, founded in the 9th century. A weekend trip to the stunning capital of Moscow is also included, where you can tour the Kremlin, visit Lenin’s tomb and see a show at the Bolshoi theater.
CEA offers you the very unique opportunity to dine with a local Russian family in the intimacy of their own home. A great opportunity to get acquainted with daily life in Russia and experience first-hand how local families live. Parties and other activities with young Russian students are also organized to enable you to integrate into the host culture.
July is one of the nicest times of the year, when it is generally warm and sunny, with very long days and very short nights. There is so much to see and do here you may not get a lot of sleep, but I am confident you will have the time of your life in the St. Petersburg, cultural capital of Russia!
