Academic Focus
Designed for students who are interested in learning about South Africa, this program will provide an in-depth look into contemporary South African reality. Students will take two courses - one required course, South African History, Culture and Language, and one elective course. The course on South African History, Culture and Language will provide students with an introduction into the long and tumultuous history of South Africa and the way it has shaped today’s South African society and culture. Students will also be able to acquire some basic language skills in Afrikaans and Xhosa, the two primary languages spoken in the Eastern Cape. As their second course, students will be able to choose an Environmental Studies course or a or Community Service course. Elective courses are designed to examine issues critical to today’s life and the global future from a South African perspective.
Each of the courses will meet for a total 45 contact hours and students will receive 6 credits upon successful completion of the program.
Schedule Summary
Classes will meet Monday through Friday three hours per day. Contact hours will include relevant field trips and site visits within the Eastern Cape area in order to highlight topics and issues discussed in class. As part of the South African History, Culture and Language course students will also take an overnight field trip to a more remote site where students will gain practical exposure to the course content.
Course Registration
Enrollment in the African History, Culture and Language Course is automatic; students will, however, be required to submit their preference for the elective course to the CEA headquarters office prior to departure for South Africa. Elective course offerings are dependent on minimum enrollment and course offerings are not guaranteed. Thus, it is in your best interest to have all four courses approved by your advisor to ensure credit transfer.
