Academic Focus
Designed for students who are interested in sustainable development, conservation, and the environment, this program will examine the unique environmental issues that define South Africa.
Students will take an Environmental Studies Module, which offers a sound introduction to South Africa’s extraordinary diversity and contemporary issues.
The Environmental Studies Module will allow students to witness the juxtaposition of the developed and developing world. Time spent in-class at the university will be supplemented by extensive field studies. Participants will visit one or more of the Eastern Cape’s famous game reserves as well as coastal areas such as Woody Cape Nature Reserve and Bird Island. This course is largely field trip based with visits to ancient caves and modern National Parks, including Addo Elephant National Park. Other field trips include sites such as George and Knysa (located on South Africa’s beautiful Garden Route), which will illustrate South Africa’s efforts to reconcile development and conservation.
This course will meet for a total of 90 contact hours and students will receive 6 credits upon successful completion of the program.
Schedule Summary
Classes will meet Monday through Thursday four hours per day. Fridays will be reserved as study days. Contact hours will include relevant field trips and site visits within the Eastern Cape area in order to highlight topics and issues discussed in class. As part of the Environmental Studies course students will also take an overnight field trip to a more remote site with knowledgeable local hosts.
