Description
This elective looks at a selection of twentieth-century African travel writings by Graham Greene, Laurens van der Post, Shiva Naipaul and Paul Theroux. It concerns itself with the ways in which the texts under consideration represent the African imaginary in the contexts of early twentieth-century colonialism (Greene and Van der Post) and late twentieth-century decolonisation (Naipaul and Theroux). Through an examination of the discursive practices employed by these texts in representing Africa, the elective seeks to raise issues around the translation of cultural difference.
