Comparative African Politics and Democratization
CEA Partner Institution: Stellenbosch University Location: Stellenbosch, South AfricaPrimary Subject Area: Political Science Other Subject Area(s): Cultural Studies, Sociology Level(s): 300 Instruction in: English Recommended Semester Credits: 3 Contact Hours: 45 Description To indicate that not all democracies are durable: some erode and even break down whereas other consolidate; to assess contemporary theories on consolidation; to point out that stable transitions from authoritarian rule do not necessarily make democracies endure; to understand what the variables are: political rights and civil liberties (i.e. institutions), affluence and inequality reduction (i.e. economy), and middle class formation and autonomous civil society (ie society); to make comparative evaluations of southern and some eastern African states as well as case studies of Nigeria, Zimbabwe, South Africa, China, Russia and India.
