Stellenbosch Excursions

One of the benefits of studying abroad is the ability to venture outside your host city and explore the surrounding area. Excursions are offered for all semester, year, and summer programs. Semester students are typically offered two to three excursions and summer students are typically offered one to two excursions. You will receive a calendar of the specific CEA excursions offered for your program during orientation. To give you an idea of the possibilities, we have collected typical experiences from some of the day trips and weekend tours we may offer.

Tour of the Garden Route

This tour will expose you to one of South Africa’s most beautiful and diverse ecosystems. Along the route which used to be considered mainly as a connecting corridor between the two cities of Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, you will have the chance to see some of the most unspoiled beaches and coastal areas, greatest expanse of indigenous forests, and most lush countryside in all of South Africa. The route is home to elephants, dolphins and whales, a great variety of birds, historic sites and malls providing first-rate shopping, bungee and ostrich rides for those looking for thrill-seekers, beaches providing opportunities for relaxation, and much more.

Cederberg Mountains

Known for dramatic rock formations and rock art stemming from the indigenous San tribe, one of the earliest human inhabitants, the Cederberg Mountains provide an opportunity to discover one of South Africa’s Wilderness Areas first hand. Located two hours north of Cape Town, the Cederberg Mountains will allow you to take a step back in time by discovering San rock art in caves and overhangs throughout the area, take in the wild and unspoiled area on a hike and experience South African hospitality staying with a local farming family.

Cape Town

Cape Town, South Africa’s "Mother City", not only has a cultural heritage spanning more than 300 years but also offers the top three national attractions in South Africa: Table Mountain; the V&A Waterfront and the historically significant Robben Island. Between beautiful Cape Dutch homesteads, the Kristenbosch Gardens, experiencing the rich colorful culture and art of District Six, the scenic view of the Twelve Apostles, the smell of spicy Malay cooking and the taste of internationally recognized wines, this city and its inhabitants will fill your senses.

Hermanus

Hailed as one of the finest fishing and holiday resort areas in the world, beautiful Hermanus will provide you with an opportunity to revel in one of South Africa’s picture postcard destinations. Opportunities for things to do in this scenic resort town abound and range from enjoying the great outdoors by watching majestic whales play off the coast or enjoying a sunset river cruise to taking in the finer side of life by dining in one of Hermanus’ first-rate restaurants or shopping in local crafts and specialty stores.
