Academic Focus

The International Business Program at the University of Alicante is designed for students of all language levels who are interested in taking business and economics classes in English while being immersed in the Spanish culture. Your classes will help you gain valuable skills for the global marketplace. You will enroll in four to five business electives taught in English and you will have the option of taking one 4-week intensive Spanish language course through the Sociedad de Relaciones Internacionales (SRI) as an Early Start Option to the program.

The Early Start language course will focus on oral comprehension and expression, listening comprehension and grammar components appropriate to your language level. Business courses will help you gain insight into the world of international business while allowing you to earn credits towards your major requirements.

Business electives meet for a total of 40 contact hours per semester and are generally worth 3 credits in the US semester system. All students must enroll in a total of 4 – 5 courses per semester.

The Early Start Spanish Language course meets for 60 contact hours generally worth 4 US credits.

Schedule Summary

Business courses are scheduled throughout the day Monday to Thursday. Each class meets twice a week for a total of 4 hours per week. Spanish language classes are scheduled Monday through Friday in the mornings or the afternoons.

Course Registration

Students must register for courses prior to departure for Alicante. A course selection form will be sent to you upon acceptance to the program and should be turned in with your confirmation deposit, or no later than the application closure date for your program. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis so it is in your best interest to submit your course selection form as soon as possible. Classes may be cancelled due to low enrollment by the host university, so you should have additional courses approved.

If you sign up for the Early Start option, and as part of the registration process, the university requires that you complete a preliminary placement exam prior to your departure for Spain. This exam will be sent to you via email approximately six weeks before the start of the program. Final placement in your language class will take place after your language level has been assessed onsite.

You will receive further information regarding registration deadlines after acceptance to the program. To aid in the registration process, it is in your best interest to have courses, including alternates, approved by your academic advisor prior to departure. Any changes to your course selection after registrations have been finalized must be coordinated through the onsite director.
