Academic Focus

The International Business Program at the University of Alicante is designed for students of all language levels who are interested in studying business and economics in English while acquiring or enriching their Spanish language abilities. Based on the beautiful Costa Blanca, Alicante is one of the fastest growing international cities in Spain and students will find it an ideal location in which to gain valuable skills for the global marketplace. Students have access to a wide variety of business classes offered by the Department of Economics and will enjoy the opportunity to sit alongside Spaniards and other European students. This program provides students with a truly integrated university experience.

Intensive Spanish Language Course

While the semester program focuses on business courses only, spring 2011 students have the opportunity to begin the semester with a 4-week intensive Spanish language course through the Centro Superior de Idiomas (CSI). All students enrolling in this program for fall 2011 will have the 4-week intensive Spanish language course included in their program. Spanish language courses are available to students of all language levels, giving them the opportunity to immerse in the Spanish language and acclimate to their new surroundings before the semester begins. Your Spanish language course meets for 60 contact hours and is generally worth 4 US credits. This intensive format will allow you the opportunity to focus on oral comprehension and expression, listening comprehension and grammar components appropriate to your language level.

Credit

Upon completion, you will enroll in three to four business electives taught in English through the Economics Department at the University of Alicante. Spring 2011 students not enrolling in the intensive Spanish language course will need to enroll in four to five business electives. Business electives meet for a total of 40 contact hours per semester and are generally worth 3 credits in the US semester system. Business courses will offer insight into the world of international business and help you to develop the skills necessary to be successful in a global marketplace, while allowing you to earn credits towards your major requirements.

Schedule Summary

Business courses are scheduled throughout the day Monday to Friday. Each class meets twice a week for a total of 4 hours per week. Spanish language classes are scheduled Monday through Friday in the mornings or the afternoons.

Course Registration

Students must register for courses prior to departure for Alicante. A course selection form will be sent to you upon acceptance to the program and should be turned in with your program confirmation, or no later than the application closure date for your program. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis so it is in your best interest to submit your course selection form as soon as possible. Classes may be cancelled due to low enrollment by the host university, so you should have additional courses approved.

If you sign up for the Early Start option, and as part of the registration process, the university requires that you complete a preliminary placement exam prior to your departure for Spain. This exam will be sent to you via email approximately six weeks before the start of the program. Final placement in your language class will take place after your language level has been assessed onsite.

You will receive further information regarding registration deadlines after acceptance to the program. To aid in the registration process, it is in your best interest to have courses, including alternates, approved by your academic advisor prior to departure. Any changes to your course selection after registrations have been finalized must be coordinated through the onsite director.
