CEA GlobalCampus: Barcelona
The CEA GlobalCampus in Barcelona was founded in 2005 in order to provide North American students with a unique interdisciplinary liberal arts education, enhanced by its location in Barcelona, Spain. Courses are offered in both Spanish and English and give students the opportunity not only to improve their language skills, but also to further their academic pursuits in a variety of academic subjects with Barcelona as their classroom.
The courses offered at the CEA GlobalCampus in Barcelona are designed to teach students about the diverse history, politics, culture, economics and art of Spain. Courses are designed with components which expose students to different elements of the city from monuments and museums to businesses, local food markets, and government agencies. Students are encouraged to explore on their own and are challenged to draw connections between the subjects they are studying and their observations outside of the classroom. This will help them not only get to know their new surroundings in Barcelona, but also gain insight into how Spain fits into the larger European context.
The mission of the CEA GlobalCampus in Barcelona is to provide students with the tools and direction to learn about Spain and ultimately reflect on their own country and culture as well. Students are expected to actively participate in their classes, since interaction will be critical for the students' academic success. Faculty selected to teach at the CEA GlobalCampus in Barcelona are interested in the intellectual, cultural and emotional growth of the students and strive to engage them in lively discussions.
Courses taught at the CEA GlobalCampus center in Barcelona* have been designed in conjunction with, and approved by, the University of New Haven (UNH). In addition, faculty appointments have been approved by UNH. After the successful completion of a session at the CEA GlobalCampus in Barcelona, students will receive credit for their work from UNH. Located in Connecticut, the University of New Haven is a student-focused, comprehensive university and is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). The agreement between CEA and UNH follows the highest standards of good practice in education abroad and satisfies the rigorous requirements of the University's institutional accreditor. Curriculum at the CEA GlobalCampus in Barcelona is complimented by academic services such as Spanish language tutoring, a library, and student computer lab. We also encourage students to bring their own laptops so that they may utilize the CEA GlobalCampus in Barcelona's Wi-Fi internet connection.
*The courses taught at the CEA GlobalCampus in Barcelona are also accredited by Antonio de Nebrija University. Located in Madrid and founded in 1995, Antonio de Nebrija is accredited by the Spanish Ministry of Education. Students attending summer 2008 sessions will automatically receive a transcript from Antonio de Nebrija. Students attending the Fall 2008 semester may request a transcript from Antonia de Nebrija. Classroom Information
- Classes are taught by international faculty selected by CEA and approved by UNH.
- Most faculty are bilingual (Spanish/English) and represent a variety of different backgrounds.
- Periodic exams, homework assignments and final exams will be administered.
- Attendance in all classes is mandatory and monitored by each professor.
- Classes are specifically offered to be taken with other CEA students of equivalent language levels and not with native Spanish students.
- Teaching styles in Spain can be very different from those found in the US or Canada. Be prepared to adapt to the different classroom structures and coursework expectations for your school.
- The maximum class size for language courses is 15 students and for elective courses is 25 students. These small class sizes will enable you to receive more personalized attention from your instructors.
Grading
Professors at the CEA GlobalCampus in Barcelona will carefully evaluate student's work and progress throughout their academic session. Written and oral exercises, homework assignments, attendance, classroom participation and performance on exams will be taken into account when calculating the final grade.

Completion of a course is defined as a receipt of a letter grade (A+ to F) as opposed to Withdrawal or Incomplete.
In order to determine a quality point ratio, each letter grade from a completed course is assigned a quality point value. The quality point value for each grade earned during a semester is multiplied by the number of semester hours assigned to that course. The sum of these points is the total number of quality points earned during the semester. It is divided by the number of semester hours completed to obtain the quality point ratio (QPR).
