Academic Focus

The Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Program offered in the summer at the CEA GlobalCampus in Barcelona is designed for students of all language levels who wish to explore the history and culture of Spain through electives offered in both English and Spanish. A wide variety of courses are offered, from Spanish Architecture and Spanish Language to Contemporary Spanish History and the European Union. The diversity in curriculum allows students the flexibility to choose courses that best meet their individual academic and personal needs. All electives offered at the CEA GlobalCampus in Barcelona are designed to help students gain insight into the history, culture and sociology of Spain while allowing them to earn credits toward their major or graduation requirements.

Students can choose to enroll in a 1 or 2 course option. Courses are available in subject areas such as History, Cinema, Cultural Studies, Art History and International Business. Spanish language courses are available throughout the summer for all language levels. Students are highly encouraged to take a language class to enhance their understanding of Spanish culture, however, language courses are not required. The CEA GlobalCampus in Barcelona offers two 4-week summer sessions, one in June and one in July. Students can opt to participate in one session or two back-to-back sessions in order to earn additional credit.

The location of the CEA GlobalCampus in Barcelona, Spain also helps to frame the curriculum of the Liberal Arts & Social Sciences program. Courses are designed to make use of Barcelona as the "classroom". Both in and out of class, students are encouraged to explore the city and draw connections between their first hand observations and the subjects they are studying.

All language courses and electives meet for a total of 45 contact hours and are generally worth 3 credits in the US semester system. Students enrolled in the 1 course option will earn 3 credits whereas students in the 2 course option will earn 6 credits. Note, it is up to the discretion of your academic advisor how much credit will be awarded.

Schedule Summary

Classes meet 4 to 5 days a week for 2 ½ or 3 hours each session. Classes may be held in the afternoon or morning and class schedules will not be finalized until students arrive onsite.

Course Registration

Students must register for courses, including alternates, prior to departure for Barcelona. During the pre-departure process, all students are required to complete a course selection form indicating their course preferences and alternates. Students are encouraged to submit their form as early as possible as popular courses fill up quickly. Based on the course selection form and course availability, students will be pre-registered for courses.

Students taking language courses will take a placement exam on the first day of class to confirm their language level. Though students will register for courses prior to their departure for Spain, final placement in language classes and electives will not take place until after your language level has been assessed. In order to ensure that you receive credit for your selected courses, it is in your best interest to have courses at several levels approved by your academic advisor prior to departure.
