Academic Focus

The Liberal Arts & Business Program offered in the summer at the CEA Global Campus in Barcelona is designed for students of all language levels who wish to explore the history and culture of Spain, as well as international business issues, through electives offered in both English and Spanish. A wide variety of courses are offered, from Spanish Architecture and Spanish Language to International Business and International Marketing. The diversity in curriculum allows students the flexibility to choose courses that best meet their individual academic and personal needs while earning academic credit toward their major or graduation requirements.

Students can choose to enroll in a 1-course or 2-course program. Courses are available in subject areas such as History, Cinema, Cultural Studies, Art History and International Business. Spanish language courses are available throughout the summer for all language levels. While CEA earnestly encourages students to take a language class in order to enhance understanding of Spanish culture, language courses are not required. The CEA Global Campus in Barcelona offers two 4-week summer sessions, one in June and one in July. Students may enroll in either one session or, to earn additional credit, two back-to-back sessions.

All language courses and electives meet for a total of 45 contact hours and are generally awarded 3 credits in the US semester system. Students enrolled in the 1-course option will earn 3 credits whereas students in the 2-course option will earn 6 credits. However, it is up to the student’s academic advisor to determine how much credit will be awarded.

Program Objectives

Students will develop and apply appropriate cognitive, behavioral, affective, ethical intercultural and communicative skills for analyzing and evaluating targeted concepts and issues in the Liberal Art or Business fields while simultaneously identifying and articulating salient cultural differences in the host country’s approach to such issues, all considered within the larger context of globalization. Students successfully achieving these objectives will strengthen communicative or language skills, develop cognitive abilities, and acquire targeted global learning.

All courses offered at the CEA Global Campus in Barcelona are designed to help students gain insight into the history, culture and sociology of Spain through active engagement with the local setting. The location of the CEA Global Campus in Barcelona also helps frame the curriculum of the summer Liberal Arts & Business program. Courses are uniquely designed to make use of the city of Barcelona as the extended "classroom". Both in and out of class, students are encouraged to explore the city, its people, and its culture by drawing connections between their personal observations and the related topics they address in the Liberal Art and Business disciplines.

Schedule Summary

Classes typically meet Monday through Thursday for 2 ½ or 3 hours each session although study trips and other required fieldwork may occur on Fridays. Classes are offered at various times throughout the day. Class timetables will be released approximately 3 months before the program closure date, and your final course schedule will be posted to your MyCEA Account around two weeks before the program start date.

Course Registration

Students must register for courses prior to departure for Barcelona. A course preference form will be posted to your MyCEA Account when course timetables are released. This form should be completed upon your acceptance to the program and no later than the program closure date. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis so it is in your best interest to submit your course preference form as soon as possible.

Course preferences are considered final when submitted to CEA. You will take an online language placement exam prior to the program closure date and will receive a preliminary language level assignment. However, your final language level may be adjusted onsite. To aid in the registration process, it is in your best interest to have courses, including alternates, approved by your academic advisor prior to submitting your course preference form.
