The University of Granada is recognized by the Spanish Ministry of Education as a degree granting institution of higher learning.
University of Granada

University of Granada

The University of Granada was established in 1531, and over the last five centuries it has grown to be the third largest University in Spain. Its influence as a center of social and cultural importance continues to grow, making it one of the major intellectual focal points in Spain. With a student population of 73,000, the University offers a complete range of courses and a great variety of cultural, artistic and sport activities. It is equipped with all the necessary facilities expected from a leading University center.

Students will take classes at the University of Granada's Modern Language Center, Centro de Lenguas Modernas, established in 1992. It is located in the historic and central Realejo neighborhood, in the ancient Palace of Santa Cruz (16th century) and in a charming modern palace called the Huerta de los Ángeles (early 20th century). The Centro accommodates in these two buildings approximately 10,000 Spanish and international students. Faculty includes both specialists in language instruction as well as University professors and lecturers. The Centro at the University of Granada not only offers its Spanish Courses for Foreigners (Cursos de Español para Extranjeros), but also houses programs for Spanish students majoring in foreign languages such as French, English, German and Italian.

Students from all regions of Spain study at the University of Granada. Many social and cultural activities sponsored by the University foster interaction with Spanish students. Other University services include university ID, computer lab and wifi access, language lab, media center, student café, access to sports facilities, and a campus bookstore.

Classroom Information

  • International faculty from University of Granada will teach your language courses and electives at the Centro de Lenguas Modernas (CLM), an extension of the University of Granada campus for students who study languages.
  • Periodic exams, homework assignments and final exams will be administered.
  • Attendance in all classes is mandatory and monitored by each professor. CLM requires a minimum of 80% of attendance.
  • Teaching styles in Spain can be very different from those found in the US or Canada. Be prepared to adapt to the different classroom structures and coursework expectations for your school.
  • Class size ranges between 10 and 15 students for language courses and between 10 and 40 students for your electives.
  • You will be in class with international students from the US, Europe, Canada and other parts of the world. Due to the superior mastery of the language required, you will not be in classes with host national students unless you take the Integrated Courses which offer the option of studying with Spaniards at other schools of UGR.

Grading

The Spanish grading system is based on a scale of 10, as opposed to 100 in the US system. It would be inaccurate to merely multiply a Spanish grade by 10 to find its US equivalent. In addition to listing a numeric grade for each course, transcripts from Spanish universities list a verbal grade. Grading in Spain can be rather severe, and students should be prepared to adapt to different methods of teaching. Spanish professors do not grade on a curve or relative to the performance of all students in the class. Written and oral exercises, reading exercises, homework assignments, attendance, classroom participation and your performance on exams will be taken into account in calculating the final grade.
