Academic Focus

The Spanish Language & Culture Program at the University of Granada is designed for students at the intermediate language level and above who wish to focus their studies on continued language acquisition and improvement, while taking electives focused on the Spanish culture. You will enroll in one Spanish language course and two Spanish electives. Regardless of your session, your language course will focus on oral comprehension and expression, listening comprehension and grammar components appropriate to your language level. Your Spanish electives will help you continue to develop your language skills while allowing you to further explore the history, literature, geography and sociology of Spain.

Language courses meet for a total of 40 contact hours, which is generally worth 3 credits in the US semester system. Electives meet for 20 contact hours each, which is generally worth 1 credit in the US semester system. If students choose to enroll in two electives from the same group, it will appear as one course on the transcript, totaling 40 contact hours. Students may receive up to 3 semester credits for this option. Please contact your CEA Advisor for the grouping details.

Schedule Summary

Spanish language courses are held for two hours a day, either in the morning or the afternoon, Monday through Friday. Your schedule will be determined onsite. Each elective meets for one hour per day, Monday through Friday. Depending on your Spanish language course schedule, your electives will take place either just after or just before your language class.

Course Registration

You will begin your session with a placement exam. You will then be placed in classes with other students of your own language level. The Spanish Language & Culture program offers courses at four different language levels: intermediate, advanced, superior and mastery. There are two sections (A/B) offered within each level. In order to ensure that you receive credit for the level that you place into, it is in your best interest to have courses at several levels approved by your academic advisor prior to departure.

In addition, all students are required to complete an elective selection form prior to departure. This form must be returned to the CEA Tempe office with your confirmation deposit, or no later than the application closure date for your program. You will automatically be registered for your language courses.
