Here's what Begonia has to say about Granada

Undoubtedly Granada is the perfect place for a study abroad experience. In fact, it is the number one destination for European study abroad students. The University of Granada was established in 1531 by Emperor Charles V. It is part of the Coimbra Group of Universities, which is composed of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Europe (Oxford, Bologna and Cambridge, among others.) Nowadays, there are more than 73,000 students, making Granada a safe and inexpensive city offering an ideal student environment.

You will experience a total linguistic and cultural immersion. Granada is cosmopolitan, but offers an incredibly strong local personality where almost no English is spoken. Practicing your Spanish on a daily basis will be a must. In Granada, you will experience all of the typical Spanish stereotypes and customs: free tapas, bullfights, flamenco, siestas, friendly and open people, endless nightlife, and much more.

Granada is fairytale city and the sunsets at the Alhambra have been described as the most beautiful in the world. Its traditional and historic cobbled stone streets mix with modernity and amusement. The Arabs, who took the city in 711 and ruled until 1492, left an impressive cultural heritage. There are remains of the Arabic culture everywhere: the design of the city, the population, the gastronomy, names, Arab Baths, tea houses, shops, many institutions, and above all, the citadel of the Alhambra, the most visited monument in Spain and finalist in the “New Seven Wonders of the World” contest.

Granada has an intense cultural life and the city has inspired many artists throughout history: Lorca, Falla, and Washington Irving, just to name a few. There are countless affordable cultural events throughout the year. One of the most important is The Granada International Music and Dance Festival, hosting great performers such as Rubinstein, Victoria de los Ángeles, Andrés Segovia, Schuricht, Karajan, Celibidache, Margot Fonteyn, and Nureyev, among others.

The city of Granada is perfectly situated, surrounded by Sierra Nevada, the highest mountain range of continental Spain, and very close to the beaches of Costa Tropical and Costa del Sol. With more than 320 days of sunshine a year, Granada is the ideal spot for practicing all types of sports, including skiing, nautical activities and hiking in one of the seven natural parks of the Granada province. The city has a great road system and its international airport is an accessible gateway to the rest of Europe. Granada is located only 170 miles from Africa and 223 miles from Portugal.
